De jaren 30 ervoer hij als kind zwaar. Hij werkte als leerling bij een fabriek.
In de Duitse bezettingstijd dook hij onder. Na de oorlog ging hij in dienst. De militaire opleiding vond de geinterviewde onder de maat.

Op de Klipfontein vertrok hij in 1946 naar Indie. Zijn eenheid werd omgeschoold van bewakingseenheid naar gevechtseenheid. Hij reflecteert op de slechte situatie qua voorlichting en uitrusting.
Van de Nederlandse landmachtofficieren had hij geen hoge pet op. Tijdens patrouille te Nglobo raakte de geinterviewde zwaar gewond, waar hij na de oorlog zijn werk door moest opgeven. Tijdens de uitzending had hij veel steun aan het geloof.
In 1949 keerde hij weer terug naar huis. Hij heeft geen band met Indonesie opgebouwd. Hij ziet zijn tijd in Nederlands Indie als verloren tijd maar is nu terugkijkend niet ontevreden over zijn levensloop.
