The agency compiled this county-based information to provide policymakers, researchers, and other professionals with information for use in health service research, health policy analysis, health care planning, and other geographically based studies.
Description
This series contains over 6,000 variables for all counties and the independent cities that are county equivalents. The exception is Alaska, whose data is at the state level.
ARF has information in seven broad areas: health professionals, healt h facilities, health utilization, health care expenditures, health training, population characteristics, and environment. The health professional information includes the number of physicians by specialty, nurses, and medical technicians. The health facilities information includes the number of hospitals, veterans' hospitals, health maintenance organizations, and nursing homes.

The health utilization information includes numbers of inpatient and outpatient visits to hospitals and other health care-giving facilities. The health care expenditure information includes Medicare reimbursements and medical facility expenditures such as capital and payroll expenses (costs of medical care). The health training information includes training given to medical doctors, nurses and veterinarians among others.
Among the population characteristics included in the files are the race, sex and age of the current population, as well as natality and mortality statistics, for each county or county equivalent. Information on environment in the files includes land use, weather characteristics, and large animal populations. The information varies from release to release and has grown from 1,462 variables in the first release in 1978 to 6,303 variables in the 2001 release.
