A Bicopter-Based Aerial-Terrestrial Robot: Mechatronic Design and Analysis

Listed in ScienceDB

To address the limited environmental adaptability of conventional multicopter UAVs and the high iteration cost of multimodal robot prototyping, this article presents AMOEBA, a bicopter-based aerial-terrestrial amphibious UAV platform.

Description

By combining a thrust-vectoring mechanism with a four-passive-caster chassis, the platform reuses the twin-rotor power system for both flight and ground locomotion and enables seamless transition between the two modes.

Around this platform, systematic studies were carried out on mechatronic design, additive-manufacturing parameter calibration, geometric-parameter extraction, flight-feasibility analysis, and field experiments. First, SolidWorks-based modeling, assembly constraints, and interference checks were completed for the full vehicle, and a strength-calibration procedure was established for key load-bearing printed components. Second, destructive tests on PETG parts with different infill densities and patterns were conducted to obtain engineering guidelines for printing-parameter selection.

Third, an online Projection Area Estimation Tool (PAET), developed from the Pyfrontal project, was implemented for rapid extraction of projected areas of complex assemblies. In addition, static thrust analysis shows that the total effective rotor thrust reaches 16.4192~N, meeting the basic takeoff requirement of the current prototype. Field tests further demonstrate short-distance takeoff and preliminary lift-off control in flight mode, as well as stable straight motion, reverse motion, and differential steering in ground mode.

Overall, AMOEBA shows clear engineering feasibility, although further improvement is still needed in flight stability, mass distribution, and energy consumption.
