Edible termites’ distribution and occurrence records (1950-2025) archived at the National Museums of Kenya

Listed in GBIF

This dataset comprises historical and contemporary occurrence records of edible termite species collected across East Africa between 1950 and 2025, preserved within the Zoological Invertebrate reference collections of the National Museums of Kenya (NMK).

Description

The dataset spans 75 years of termite’s occurrence records. The records include specimen-based data documenting spatial distribution, species occurrence, collection dates, and taxonomic identification.

They were compiled from museums voucher specimens, archived consolidated from field expeditions, biodiversity surveys, ecological monitoring programs, academic research collections, and museums accessions from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The dataset includes specimen-level information on taxonomy, collection locality, geographic coordinates, collector names, and collection dates. This dataset provides an important baseline for studies on edible insect biodiversity, species distribution modelling, climate change impacts, food security, and sustainable utilization of termites as alternative protein resources in East Africa.
