Replication Data for: Fig 21.1, BTPDs, Infanticide vs colony density, 16 July 2026

Listed in data.InDoRES

All data shown are from the Rankin Ridge study-colony at Wind Cave National Park for the years 1981 through 1988.

Description

See also Hoogland 1981,Table 7.2 ( page 137). Details of the Rankin Ridge colony are in Chapters 4, 11, and 21.

Colony density = number of adult and yearling BTPDs per hectare. A parturient female is a female that recently gave birth. For BTPDs, most maraudings eliminated entire litters (whole-litter infanticide), but some maraudings eliminated only some of the offspring within a litter (partial-litter infanticide) For BTPDs, I could examine the effect of colony size on (a) the number of killers per parturient female and (b) the number of litters victimized by infanticide For BTPDs, most maraudings involved underground killing of juveniles.

For more details about infanticide among BTPDs, see Chapter 7 of Hoogland 1995. These data used for Fig 21.1 in Hoogland 2026. Colony density = number of adult and yearling BTPDs per hectare = number of adults and yearling at Rankin Ridge Colony vs area occupied (hectares) by Rankin Ridge Colony This file ready for longterm storage on 15 April 2025.

I considered data from the same prairie dog in different years to be independent. At the Rankin Ridge Colony every year, all the adults and yearlings of both sexes were eartagged and marked with Nyanzol fur dye Date in this EXCEL file are NUMBERS--not percentages For BTPDs, most cases of infanticide involved killing an ENTIRE LITTTER, for which I did not know exact litter size For these latter BTPD cases, I assumed 3 kills when a killer dispatched an entire litter, because the mean litter size at weaning is 3.08 (See Fig 17.5 of Hoogland 2026).
