Biomass, productivity and diurnal migration of marine plankton in shallow waters at Cape Bird

Samples were taken at intervals of 4 days from early December to late January in plastic buckets from the fast ice in water up to 1m depth. Phytoplankton was studied from the aspects of standing crop and productivity.

The standing crop was measured by microscopal examination and direct cell counts, and chlorophyll and carotenoid analysis of the seawater by a spectrophotometric method. Productivity was measured by the light and dark bottle technique. Zooplankton standing crop was estimated by direct counts of species and dry weights of the macro zooplankton.
