Occurrence data of papaya mealybug (Paraccocus marginatus) in Burundi, Kenya, and Uganda

Despite their economic and nutritional significance, the full production potential of these crops has not been realized due to persistent challenges: stringent phytosanitary requirements for international trade, environmental stress, and pest infestations. Scale insect (Hemiptera) infestations stand out as a major constraint to both production and market access.

Due to their cryptic nature, small size, and morphological complexity, scale insects are difficult to detect and identify, thereby complicating management and regulatory interventions. This study was conducted to assess the current status of scale insects infestations in avocado, mango, pineapple, and pawpaw across Burundi, Kenya, and Uganda. Samples collected from the three countries were processed at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS).
