A Reproducibility Dataset for Rukūʿ Boundaries, Addressee Changes, Rhetorical Closures, and Internal Movement Units in the Qur'an
Listed in figshare
Description

This dataset develops a reproducibility framework for studying passage architecture within all 114 surahs of the Qur'an.

Its central question is how sub-surah discourse units can be identified, compared, and tested without assuming that inherited section divisions automatically correspond to semantic or structural passages. The study therefore treats rukūʿ boundaries as a major historical and analytical comparison system while separately testing the textual evidence that may support, weaken, relocate, or complicate those boundaries.

Version 1.0.0 contains 556 inherited rukūʿ units and 442 internal within-surah boundary positions.
These boundaries are linked to a structured evidence matrix covering addressee change, speaker change, topical completion, rhetorical closure, new opening, lexical transition, narrative turn, legal or theological movement, relation to the surah's ʿamūd, and alternative-boundary evidence.

The package includes 5,304 boundary-evidence records and 1,766 nearby alternative-boundary controls using ±1 and ±2 ayah comparison windows.

This allows a proposed passage boundary to be evaluated against plausible neighboring positions rather than being accepted solely because it appears in an inherited division system.

The research also preserves variant-aware rukūʿ provenance. Different published and digital Qur'anic systems do not always place every rukūʿ boundary at exactly the same position. Rather than collapsing these variants into a single supposedly universal scheme, the dataset records source-specific differences and treats agreement and disagreement as research data.

Descriptive analysis shows substantial variation in passage length across the corpus.
In the working inherited rukūʿ system, the median unit length is 10 ayahs, the mean is approximately 11.22 ayahs, and observed lengths range from 1 to 53 ayahs. Surah length and number of rukūʿ units are strongly associated, while normalized passage density and explicit-address density show only a weak relationship.

The study also includes selected case analyses demonstrating how inherited divisions can be tested against independent structural models.
In Al-Baqarah, several major movement boundaries correspond exactly with inherited rukūʿ starts while another important proposed structural transition does not. Al-Hujurat provides a further example in which an inherited rukūʿ boundary and a major audience broadening occur close to one another without being identical.

The purpose of the dataset is not to prove that every rukūʿ is a semantic passage. Instead, it creates a transparent framework in which inherited divisions, proposed semantic passages, discourse signals, alternative boundaries, counterevidence, confidence, provenance, and revision can all be stored and compared separately.

The dataset is intended for Qur'anic studies, Islamic studies, discourse analysis, naẓm and munāsabah research, textual segmentation, digital humanities, structural interpretation, and reproducible humanities research.

Its broader aim is to make passage-level claims testable and revisable while preserving the distinction between inherited recitational divisions and independently supported discourse architecture.
