Dust Deposition Effects on Solar Cells and Exposure Risk Dataset
Listed in ScienceDB
To address the risk of lunar dust deposition on solar cells operating in the lunar south polar environment, a vacuum experimental platform for lunar dust transport was established.
Description
The effects of electron irradiation at energies of 50-500 eV, ultraviolet irradiation, and different installation angles on the short-circuit current of perovskite solar cells were investigated. In addition, the Spacecraft Plasma Interaction System (SPIS) software was employed to simulate the distribution of lunar dust near the lunar surface under three representative plasma environments.
The results indicate that the relationship between the short-circuit current and the areal density of deposited lunar dust can be described by an empirical exponential function. Lunar dust deposition occurs predominantly during the initial stage of irradiation, while increasing the installation angle can significantly reduce the equivalent amount of dust deposition. The simulations show that the near-surface lunar dust number density is highest under solar-wind conditions, reaching 108-109 m-3.

At an altitude of 20 m, the dust number density decreases by approximately one order of magnitude compared with that near the lunar surface. Based on the simulated lunar dust number densities and the experimental results obtained at different installation angles, a relative lunar dust exposure risk index was developed. The results demonstrate that the exposure risk decreases markedly with increasing installation height and angle.
These findings provide a useful reference for the deployment and dust-mitigation design of photovoltaic modules in the lunar south polar region.
