LL-MH02 26A: A Dataset of Neurological, Physiological, and Perceptual Responses during Clinical Communication Training in Medical Education
Listed in Tecnológico de Monterrey Data Hub
This dataset was collected during an undergraduate medical education intervention conducted, at Tecnologico de Monterrey, School of Medicine and Health Sciences (EMCS), as part of the course Conception and Pregnancy.
Description
The activity was facilitated by Professor Armando Martín Moreno Amador and involved students. The educational intervention consisted of a clinical simulation exercise involving interactions with standardized patients.
During the simulation, students assumed the role of healthcare professionals responsible for communicating and explaining conditions associated with high-risk pregnancies. Simulated patients actively engaged in the consultation process by asking specific questions regarding diagnosis, treatment considerations, risk factors, and patient care. Participants were required to demonstrate clinical reasoning, effective communication skills, and patient-centered decision-making while responding to evolving patient concerns.

The activity was organized into four consecutive instructional rounds, allowing the continuous collection of multimodal biometric data throughout the simulation experience. Neurophysiological activity was recorded using the Muse 2 EEG headband, which captures electroencephalographic signals from four channels (TP9, AF7, AF8, and TP10) at a sampling frequency of 256 Hz. The recorded signals support the analysis of cognitive processes associated with attention, concentration, mental workload, engagement, and fatigue during the clinical simulation.
Physiological activity was simultaneously monitored using the Empatica Embrace Plus wearable device. Biomarkers collected included Electrodermal Activity (EDA), Blood Volume Pulse (BVP), Skin Temperature, and derived cardiovascular indicators obtained from photoplethysmography signals. These physiological measurements provide information regarding autonomic nervous system activation, emotional arousal, stress responses, and physiological adaptation during patient interactions.
In addition to the biometric recordings, the dataset includes demographic information and self-reported perception measures related to alertness, fatigue, stress, sleep habits, health conditions, substance consumption, and subjective perceptions of the simulation experience, including enjoyment, concentration demands, and perceived alertness during the activity. The purpose of this dataset is to document and analyze neurological, physiological, and perceptual responses exhibited by medical students during standardized patient simulations focused on high-risk pregnancy scenarios.
The dataset provides a valuable resource for studying cognitive and emotional processes during clinical communication tasks and contributes to the growing body of research on multimodal learning analytics in healthcare education.
