Coal Reserves Data Files

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency created and used these files to analyze and report statistics on coal reserves.

Description

This series contains data on the quantity and quality of resources and recoverable coal in the United States. There are two files: the Demonstrated Reserves Base (DRB) file and the Estimated Recoverable Reserves (EST) file.

The DRB is a database of measured and indicated coal reserves "in place" (in the ground, undisturbed) and occurring within depths and coalbed thicknesses considered potentially minable. The DRB is presented for all coal ranks combined, by state and presumable type of mining (underground or surface) and is allocated to ranges of heat and sulfur content. The EST is a database of the estimated recoverable reserves of U.S. coal, reported by the same categories as in the DRB database.

Estimated recoverable reserves represent coal believed to be recoverable from the DRB and are derived from DRB coal resources by applying state, regional, or local accessibility and recovery rates. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
