Listed in Harvard Dataverse

Description

The 1996 presidential election was the highest level executive election that Taiwan has ever faced. It is thus a necessary subject of study in the effort to understand voting behavior in Taiwan.

Our model of voting in Taiwan can be simplified as follows: the chance that a voter will vote for a certain candidate is influenced by partisan leanings, issue positions, evaluations of candidates, ethnic background, and social background. The population of this survey was defined as all citizens residing in Taiwan (not including the Chinmen and Matsu areas) aged twenty or more who are eligible voters and who have a telephone.

This survey featured a panel design in which four waves of telephone interviews were carried out. The respondents of the fourth wave, which was carried out after the election, were the respondents who had been successfully interviewed in the first three waves. In all, 1169 interviews were successfully completed.
