Wireless power transfer and information transmission in advanced MIMO systems

Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17034/32826347.v1

This thesis investigates simultaneous wireless and information transfer (SWIPT) in advanced multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, with a particular focus on cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO), extremely large MIMO (XL-MIMO), and continuous aperture array (CAPA) architectures.

Description

The work is motivated by future wireless networks in which massive numbers of energy-constrained devices must be served reliably and sustainably through spatially controlled electromagnetic (EM) transmission.

To this end, the thesis develops system models and optimization frameworks that jointly account for communication performance, harvested energy, and implementation dependent power consumption.

The first technical contribution considers CF-mMIMO-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) for Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. A stochastic battery evolution framework based on Markov chains is developed to characaterize practical nonlinear energy-harvesting behavior and to enable power-allocation schemes that sustain long-term device operation.

The second and third contributions focus on XL-MIMO systems. For non-stationary near-field channels, user-dependent subarray activation and power allocation are jointly optimized to maximize harvested power efficiency. For mixed near- and far-field SWIPT, a practical user-classification rule, based on inter-frequency channel correlation, is developed and embedded into a power minimization framework subject to spectral efficiency and harvested energy constraints.

The final technical contribution studies distributed CAPAs for multiuser SWIPT. The thesis develops EM consistent channel models, practical beam-training and channel reconstruction strategies, and power allocation algorithms tailored to distributed CAPA deployments.

Collectively, the thesis presents a coherent progression from distributed discrete arrays to extra large mixed near- and far-field apertures and, ultimately, to continuous radiating surfaces.

Across these architectures, the results show that accurate propagation modeling, user- and aperture-dependent resource allocation, and implementation-oriented power optimization are central to realizing the full potential of advanced MIMO systems for joint wireless information and power transmission.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2027.
