<p>A: A schematic view of the experimental enclosure.
Description
Roaches (or bristlebots) were confined within the inner walls (red) of the enclosure. The obstacle cylinders (blue) were affixed with hot glue to the floor of the enclosure so that they could be easily removed and reconfigured as desired.
A rectangular gate (green) was used to keep the roaches/robots corralled in the holding chamber on the left. Note that the colors are for illustrative purposes only; the entire enclosure was constructed from clear poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), i.e., plexiglass. To get the best resolution for our image-tracking analysis, the camera field-of-view only included the central corridor of the experimental enclosure. C: A photo of the entire experimental setup, including the plexiglass enclosure on the ground and the tripod-mounted camera, elevated on a table to capture a sufficiently wide view of the enclosure.</p>
