Crashworthiness Data System (CDS) Files

The agency developed these files to provide an automated and comprehensive national traffic accident data base.
Description
The agency used them to assess the overall state of traffic safety, to identify existing and potential traffic safety problems; obtain detailed data on the crash performance of passenger cars, light trucks, vans, and utility vehicles; evaluate vehicle safety systems and designs; and increase knowledge about the nature of crash injuries, as well as the relationship between the typ e and seriousness of a crash and the resultant injuries.
This series contains data from a sample of all police reported accidents occurring in the United States and has information on pedestrian, motorcycle, truck and passenger car accidents and the people involved. It includes fatal accidents as well as injury and non-injury accidents. The files focus on accidents involving automobiles and automobile derivates, light trucks and vans with gross vehicle weight less than 10,000 pounds; give special consideration to late model vehicles (the five most recent model years); and emphasize the more serious injury accidents.

Accidents included in this series must have been police reported, must have involved a harmful event (personal injury and/or property damage) resulting from an accident and must have involved at least one towed passenger car or light truck or van in transport on a trafficway.
