Effects of influenza A and SARS-CoV-2 coinfection on interferon stimulated gene expression patterns in primary human nasal epithelial cells

Listed in NCBI GEO

In the winter of 2022/23, influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viruses co-circulated in human populations without non-pharmaceutical interventions, prompting an assessment of their interaction.

Description

Co-infection of the first wave SARS-CoV-2 and influenza led to severe lung damage in animals and more severe disease in humans. However, our understanding of the underlying interaction mechanisms is limited.

Using primary human nasal epithelial cells, we analysed the replication of circulating influenza (IAV H3N2 2021) and SARS-CoV-2 (Omicron BA.5) viruses in sequential co-infections. RNAseq analysis revealed distinct subsets of interferon-stimulated genes induced by Omicron BA.5 and IAV H3N2 in pre-infected cells.
