Fig 16.7, BTPDs, MCs vs order of copulations for 3x2 chi-square test, 29 May 2026

Listed in data.InDoRES

Description

I have used this file to compare percentage of males that gave MC vs order of copulations (first male to copulate, second male to copulate, and so forth) In this file, FREQUENCY = the frequency of each variable (1,0; 1,1; 2,0, 2,1; and so forth) If a female copulated with one male only, then I have NO DATA on data from a second male or a third male This file has been checked TWO TIMES. This file is the same file that I used for Hoogland 1995.

MC = mating call by BTPD prairie dog male for estrous female These data come from summations of data from field notes from 1978 through 1988 at the single Rankin Ridge Colony at Wind Cave National Park. No BTPD data from 1989, when I spent most of my time with GPDs at Petrified Forest National Park. These data are SUMMARIES rather than raw data.

Within a year, data from the same male for different females were considered independent. Across years, data from the same male for the same or different females were considered independent. For BTPDs, I had three classes: female copulated with ONE male only, female copulated with exactly TWO males, and female copulated with exactly THREE males MC or NO MC = 0 = male that copulated did NOT give MC MC or NO MC = 1 = male that copulated DID give at least one MC Across all estrous females, this EXCEL file shows the percentage of times that the male gave a mating call for first-, second-, and third-copulating males In other words: This file shows the probability of giving an MC vs order of copulating.

For each species, notice that the sample sizes for each class of males decreased with the order of copulations. That's inevitable, because every estrous female had a first-copulating male, fewer estrous females had a second-copulating male as well, still fewer estrous females had a third-copulating male as well, and so forth. In this file, MC or NO MC = 0 = data from females that elicited 0 (zero) Mating Calls, and MC or NO MC = 1 = data from female that elicited at least one mating call during estrus.

Example: For first-copulating BTPD males, I had information for 263 + 271 = 534 BTPD males that copulated. 263 / 534 = 49.3% of those males DID give at least one MC; the other 271 / 534 = 50.7% of those males did NOT give at least one MC. In this file, order of copulations 1 = data from the first male that copulated; order of copulations 2 = data from the second male that copulated; order of copulations 3 = data from the third male that copulated; order of copulations 4 = data from the fourth male that copulated; No cases of order of cops = 4 for BTPDs order of copulations 5 = data from the fifth male that copulated; No cases of order of cops = 5 for BTPDs File name = BTPDs, MCs vs order of copulations for 3 x2 chi-square test, 29 May 2026
