The interviewee was born on 22 November, 1914 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The family moved to the Netherlands in 1925. Here, she became interested in left-wing politics.
From this perspective she enlisted as a nurse to contribute to the Spanish Civil War, to fight fascism. She talks extensively about this war. Back in the Netherlands she was active in receiving and housing refugees from Germany.
During the German occupation she continued these activities in the resistance, in a group active in the area of Vlaardingen (near Rotterdam). As a Jewish woman, she first didn’t at first have reason to fear the Nazis because she was married to a non-Jewish man. However, she was arrested because of her resistance activities.
She talks at length about her time in Westerbork concentration camp where she also became involved in the resistance. She tells a moving story about a baby who was born prematurely in Westerbork. She mentions her return from the camp, her resistance activities in Amsterdam and her experiences as a nurse just after the liberation.
