Replication Data for: Understanding causes of adolescents' ascriptions of peers' dual ethnic and national belonging
Listed in IISH Dataverse
Data and code to replicate the published paper: "Understanding causes of adolescents' ascriptions of peers' dual ethnic and national belonging." Descendants of migrants often feel a belonging to both their ethnic minority group and the national group (i.e. dual identity).
Description
However, they are often still seen as only ethnic minority who do not belong to the national in-group. Research found that if dual identifiers are recognized as members of both groups, they can create social bridges and improve intergroup relations.
Using sociometric data we investigate, among vocational school students in the Netherlands, who ascribes dual belonging to second generation migrant classmates (classmates born in the Netherlands with at least one parent who was born abroad), and why they do so. Following social identity theory and self-categorization theory, we propose that whether students ascribe second generation migrants dual belonging might depend on (the strength of) their own self-identification as national, ethnic minority or dual, and on their endorsement of ethnic and civic conceptions of nationhood.

To test our hypotheses, we use multilevel modeling to analyze dyadic ascriptions of belonging of all second generation migrant classmates (i.e., repeated observations nested in students, nested in school classes). Our dyadic data also allow us to compare dual/ethnic/national ascriptions to students’ self-identification. Components
