Description
State 1 (5.5%), State 5 (5.2%), State 3 (3.7%), State 2 (2.5%), State 4 (2.0%). (B) Mortality versus state alignment.
ICU mortality increases as alignment to assigned state clouds decreases (percent of ICU time inside the 95% state boundaries). State outliers (0–10% alignment) have 37.6% ICU mortality versus 2.3% for patients with 90–100% alignment (16-fold difference). State-specific outlier rates are in Section S.R.4 in <a href="/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pdig.0001753#pdig.0001753.s014" target="_blank">S1 Text</a>.</p>
