State 1 (6.9%), State 5 (6.4%), State 3 (5.1%), State 2 (2.0%), State 4 (1.8%). (B) Mortality versus state alignment.
Outliers (0–10% alignment) have 33.5% ICU mortality versus 3.2% for 90–100% alignment (10-fold difference), reproducing the alignment–mortality gradient. State-specific outlier rates are in Section S.R.4 in <a href="/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pdig.0001753#pdig.0001753.s014" target="_blank">S1 Text</a>.</p>
