Description
This figshare repository contains raw microscopy movies, tracking data, supporting simulation outputs and supplementary movies associated with the manuscript “The mechanisms of spatial pattern transition in motile bacterial collectives”. supplementary_movies.zip: Supplementary Movies S1 to S8, as cited in the main text and supplementary information. swarming_movies.zip and rippling_movies.zip: Raw microscopy movies from triplicate swarming and rippling experiments with Myxococcus xanthus used for the analyses in this paper.
The provided movies were downsampled by keeping one frame every 40 s instead of every 2 s, and converted from 16-bit to 8-bit format. csv_files_tracking_swarming.zip and csv_files_tracking_ripplinp_*.zip: Tracking data for Myxococcus xanthus cells in rippling and swarming fields. Tracking involved detecting 11 points along each bacterial cell body and extracting reversal positions, as well as the time intervals between consecutive reversals.

Figure_7e_f_images.zip: Microscopy images of mixed populations of Myxococcus xanthus DZ2 mCherry-labelled cells and Myxococcus xanthus frzE GFP-labelled mutant cells in predatory zones. The non-reversing frzE mutant is excluded from rippling regions. frzE_movies.zip: Microscopy movies of the Myxococcus xanthus frzE mutant during predation, focused on the edge of the prey colony. This non-reversing mutant still aligns within predatory zones.
Raw data correspond to triplicate experiments used for the analyses in this paper, and the movies were converted from 16-bit to 8-bit format. data_review_paper.zip: Supporting simulation outputs for rippling and swarming in which the alignment rule was removed halfway through the simulation: alignment with the prey-derived matrix for rippling, and alignment with self- produced EPS trails for swarming. The time of alignment removal is indicated by a dark circle in the upper-left corner of the corresponding movies.
Removing these alignment rules disrupts both rippling and swarming patterns.
