Research data from Phase 2 of UKRI Future Flight Social Science Research Director - August 2022 - March 2025 Between 2022 and 2025, Future Flight technologies saw major advancements across multiple fields.

Description

Phase Three of the Innovate UK Future Flight Challenge ran from late 2022 to March 2025, aiming to accelerate the adoption of electric sub-regional aircraft, advanced air mobility vehicles, and drones in the UK. This dataset was collected as part of broader research led by Prof.

Fern Elsdon-Baker (University of Birmingham), funded by the ESRC in partnership with Innovate UK. The University of Birmingham’s Future Flight Social Science team analysed barriers, opportunities, and social impacts, offering key insights to support scale-up in the UK, alongside a unique historical snapshot of public and stakeholder views upstream of commercialisation of a new and potentially disruptive technology. National level Surveys (designed by UoB, data collected by YouGov): Three UK-wide surveys were conducted in 2022, 2024, and 2024/2025, along with two regional boosters in Scotland and Wales (2025), and a sub-regional booster in the Scottish Highlands and Islands in partnership with Hitrans. 2. Engaging Concerned Communities: focus groups and semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from: conversation organisations, landowners, and recreational air users conducted between June 2023 and November 2024. 3.

Diversity and Inclusion: semi-structured interviews with, women, LGB+, trans and/or queer, ethnic minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals, conducted between November 2023 and July 2024. 4. Local and Regional Governance of Future Flight: semi-structured interviews with government (local, regional) and aviation innovation industry stakeholders, conducted between July 2023 July 2024. 5. Cultural and Media Representations of Future Flight: semi-structured interviews with aviation innovation industry stakeholders and news/media public figures, conducted between August 2023 July 2024. 6.

Reports and appendices by Ipsos and Thinks for Sciencewise/Innovate UK from two UK level public dialogues in 2022 and 2024. Commissioned by UKRI, these were managed by Prof. Fern Elsdon-Baker and form part of the wider collection.
