World Military Expenditures and Arms Transfers (WMEAT) Data Files

The agency collected the data to publish the annual, or biennial, WMEAT report.
Description
It and other users, used the data from the report to describe and analyze trends in international military spending and arms shipments. The agency hoped that the dissemination of the report, which contained narrative essays as well as data, would erode the secrecy of defense spending and lead to better arms control agreements.
Developed in the context of the Cold War, the WMEAT data were primarily used to st udy issues related to the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. However, after the breakup of the Soviet Union, conflicts in the Middle East became the major concern of users of the data. This series contains annual reports.

Each report contains data from the most current year plus the previous ten years. The data is organized into the following five tables: Table I. Military Expenditures, Armed Forces, Gross National Product, Central Government Expenditures and Population; Table II. Value of Arms Transfers and Total Imports and Exports; Table III.
Value of Arms Transfers; Table IV. Value of Arms Transfer Deliveries and Agreements; Table V. Number of Major Weapons Delivered. The unit of analysis is either country, geographic region or political organization, such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
