Replication Data for: Fig 16.7, GPDs, MCs vs order of copulations for 5x2 chi-square test, 29 May 2026
Listed in data.InDoRES
Description
In this file, FREQ = the frequency of each variable I have used this file to compare percentage of males that gave MC vs order of copulations (first male to copulate, second male to copulate, and so forth) This file has been checked TWO TIMES MC = mating call by GPD prairie dog male for estrous female These data come from summations of data from field notes from three different study-colonies (see below) from 1989 through 2018.
These data are SUMMARIES rather than raw data. Within a year, data from the same male for different females were considered independent. Across years, data from the same male for different females were considered independent.

For GPDs, I had five classes: female copulated with ONE male only, female copulated with exactly TWO males, female copulated with exactly THREE males, female copulated with female copulated with exactly FOUR males, and female copulated with exactly SIX males. MC or NO MC = 1 = male that copulated did NOT give MC MC or NO MC = 1 = male that copulated DID give at least one MC Across all estrous females, this EXCEL file shows the percentage of times that the male gave a mating call for first-, second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth-copulating males.
In other words: This file shows the probability of giving and MC vs order of copulating. For each species, notice that the sample sizes for each class of males decreased with the order of copulations. That's inevitable, because every estrous female had a first-copulating male, fewer estrous females had a second-copulating male as well, still fewer estrous females had a third-copulating male as well, and so forth.
In this file, order of copulations 1 = data from the first male that copulated; order of copulations 2 = data from the second male that copulated; order of copulations 3 = data from the third male that copulated; order of copulations 4 = data from the fourth male that copulated; order of copulations 5 = data from the fifth male that copulated; In this file, MC or NO MC = 1 = data from females that elicited 0 (zero) Mating Calls, and MC or NO MC = 2= female elicited at least one mating call during estrus.
This file contains information from all three GPD study-colonies: PEFO = Petrified Forest National Park from 1989 through 1995; RMC = Redondo Meadow Colony at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) from 2013 through 2016; and VCC Visitor Center Colony at VCNP for 2017 and 2018. Example: For first-copulating GPD males, I had information for 194 + 424 = 618 GPD males that copulated. 194/618 = 31.4% of those males DID give at least one MC; the other 424/618 = 68.6% of those males did NOT give at least one MC.
