Maps of eelgrass (Zostera marina) collected using drone in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland in 2020

This dataset contains raster files of eelgrass distribution at three sites (Swift Current, North Harbour, and Bay de L’Eau) in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland.
Description
This dataset was collected in the summer and falls 2020 and published in 2023. The shapefiles were created using the procedure detailed in Prystay et all. 2013: 10.1139/facets-2022-0149.
First, aerial images of eelgrass beds were collected using drone and a systematic survey design. Images were then combined to create orthomoisaics. Finally, orthomosaics were analyzed using an automatic classification method to distinguished eelgrass from other substrate type (sediment, seaweed).

Classification was informed and validated using validation points. It is important to understand that the raster files are estimation of eelgrass distribution from aerial images. Errors may have occurred during the habitat classification.
