Couple\'s Involvement and Marital Affection in Family with Disabled Children

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The study of families with disabled children becomes an important research area recently.

Description

Although many surveys and assessments have been done to those families, they were more practical oriented rather than theoretically guided. Neither have they investigated different aspects of family interactions.

The medical and social-welfare perspectives in past research also overlooked potential strengths those families may have. The purpose of this research is to approach this issue from family psychology and family study perspectives. There is an attempt to develop an interdisciplinary knowledge of families with disabled children.

The focus of this research is on couple’s involvement (i.e., sharing parenting responsibilities, co-parenting behavior, and sacrifices), and its effects on marital affection (i.e., En-qing, intimacy, and satisfaction). Measurements used in previous studies will be adapted to this research. Structural interviews will be performed to 400 parents with disabled children.

Participants will be recruited from parent’s associations of different types of childhood disabilities, with a quota sampling procedure based upon sex (male/ female) and the age of children (0-3 yrs/3-6 yrs).
