Harmony versus Justice: Value Conflict in Valuation

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The aim of this study is to explore the content of value systems of forensic and helping profession workers.

Description

It is suggested that these professions, which originate from Europe-American’s individual oriented culture may acculturate these workers with core values such as “justice” or “independence”. These core values may be in conflict with values such as “harmony” and ”interdependence”, which are core values of Chinese collective oriented culture.

The study will be conducted by interview, focus group, survey and experiments. The relationship between traditional value identification, value judgment and relationship type between those involved in social conflicts will be examined via survey data. The researcher conducted a series of deep interview and one focus group with social workers, lawyer and family court judge.

Base on interview results, I chose the family violence case, in which wife was the victim, as the core case and ask students and practitioners to evaluate their own values and to infer victims’ values. Both values and values these professions were used as estimator to predict whether they support the victim to seek divorce or go back home. Results suggested that traditional Chinese values, which emphasize tolerance and sacrifices for family and children, still influence these professionals decision.

It is also suggested that ‘individual growth’ may have different meaning for western helping profession from their Taiwanese counterparts.
