Longitudinal Retirement History Study Files

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency conducted this study to determine why an increasing number of workers were retiring before age 65 and to determine what factors most affected the timing of retirement and the quality of retirement living.

Description

This series contains longitudinal data collected from a cohort sample of individuals nearing retirement or recently retired in 1969, the base year of the study. The files include data on the retirees or their surviving spouses including age, sex, race, current employment statu s and work history, industry, and occupation; wages of present, last previous, and longest-held job; retirement plans; attitudes towards retirement; pension benefits; insurance coverage; contacts with relatives; and living expenses, assets, debts, and income.

There is also a summary of earnings since 1937 and subject to Social Security taxation; a non-response and master beneficiary record abstract file for the entire cohort; and an edited income variables file for the 6,423 original panelists still participating in the study in 1979. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
