Apparent electrical conductivity data of a 100 m long profile at the landfill in Breitenau
Listed in TU Wien Research Data
Context and methodology: Research domain: Geophysics Purpose of the dataset: The dataset presents the apparent electrical conductivity of a 100 m long profile of the landfill in Breitenau (Lower Austria), up to a depth of approximately 5 meters.
Description
Measurement instrument: The dataset was created with an experimental multi-coil multi-frequency electromagnetic induction (EMI) system. Low-frequency electromagnetic induction (EMI) is a non-invasive geophysical method that is based on the induction of electromagnetic (EM) waves into the subsurface to quantify changes in electrical conductivity.
The EMI method does not require direct contact with the ground and is therefore well suited for surveying larger areas. EMI surveys have been applied, for instance, to detect buried anthropogenic artefacts and utilities, to investigate landfills, to monitor microbial activity in hydrocarbon contaminated sites, to locate archeologic remains, and to resolve shallow soil properties such as variations in soil water content, clay content, organic matter content, or salinity.

EMI instruments often permit to measure the electrical conductivity from multiple depths simultaneously by implementing either multiple receiver coils at varying distances to the transmitter, or implementing multiple simultaneous frequencies for a single transmitter-receiver pair. In the dataset presented here, four receiving coils arranged in distances of 50 cm, 100 cm, 170 cm, and 370 cm from the transmitter, and three simultaneous operating frequencies (3.2 kHz, 9.6b kHz, and 41.6 kHz) have been used.
Technical details: Structure of the dataset: The dataset is a .csv file. Column headers are described in a .pdf file that accompanies the dataset.
