The evolution of immigration detention in the UK: the involvement of private prison companies

This RSC working paper looks at how the privatisation of immigration detention centres has affected the evolution of the immigration detention regime in the UK.
Description
Section 1 contextualises immigration detention centre privatisation in the UK. Section 2 explores the concept of the 'prison industrial complex', section 3 addresses the common concerns about accountability and transfer of liability when contracting out such core government services as prison or detention centre management and the last section concludes by considering what the implications of privatisation have been and are likely to be for immigration detention in the UK.
