local thermal environment
Listed in Teesside University Research Data Repository
The study explores the impact of urbanization on local thermal environment and the subsequent response of built environment. The primary section presents a satellite based study on the chosen location.
Description
It was noted that the built up area has increased by 45.67 percent during the period 1995-2020.With this increase, a corresponding rise in surface temperature is observed and the thermal intensity increases with the increase in built density.Later portion of the study demonstrates,a Local Climate Zone (LCZ) based detailed onsite measurement of thermal environment with calibrated instruments (LP02 pyranometer and IR02 pyrgeometer).
It was observed that, apart from the built density, the local thermal environment of a location gets altered by the local climate zone morphology. In addition, a performance analysis of built environment carried out in LCZ-2, LCZ-5 and LCZ-9 representing high, medium and low density respectively using HFP01 heat flux sensor, shows notable variations from each other. The final section presents an analytical study, using CFD tool- ENVIMET, which explores the impact of urban built morphology on thermal performance of built environment.

It was noted that, urban morphology variables such as surface characteristics and orientation significantly impact the thermal performance of the built environment, followed by H/W ratio and SVF in lesser levels. The study also highlights the impact of seasonal variations on thermal performance of the built environment in local climate zones.
