PACES Returnees in Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal

Listed in IISH Dataverse

Dataset Description Interviews with 11 beneficiaries of assisted return programs in Côte d'Ivoire and 9 beneficiaries of assisted return programs in Senegal, inquiring about their situation, their experience with the return program and their migration aspirations.

Description

Background

This dataset is one of the components of the PACES project, which aimed to understand how people decide to migrate, stay (or return for migrants). In particular, PACES sought to understand how people perceive major changes in society, how they understand their past-present and future, and how these factors influence their aspirations to stay or migrate. Purpose The data captures the perceptions of returnees, specifically migrants who returned to their country of origin through an assisted return programme.

The data reveals their thoughts about the return program, their lives in the current place of residence, what they expect in the future, both in society and in their personal lives, how they see migration and their own mobility preferences. Data Collection and

Methods

The data in this dataset were collected through semi-structured interviews. Research Limitations The limited number of interviews make this dataset not representative. However, the interviews capture an area of research that is limited and offer insight of the perspectives of returnees on future migration.

Data Structure and Relationships Between Files Interview transcripts that do not have any specific order. Value of the data for potential reuse This dataset has high value as it records people perspectives on life in these cities (Abidjan and Dakar) at this point in time, the experiences of returnees and how these two conditions influence their migration aspirations. This dataset is relevant for migration scholars, organizers of return programmes and policymakers.

Results At the moment, these data have been used for two reports that are publicly available. Conclusion This dataset has important value but given the limited number of returnees that are supported by assisted return programmes, it would not be ethical to make this dataset available, even if anonymised. For this reason, this dataset is closed access.

Access status : Closed Access Data availability : The dataset is not accessible. The repository record provides metadata only about the dataset.
