Data for "Perspective Cue Contamination: How Viewing Position in Virtual Reality Distorts Employee Judgment"
Listed in figshare

This item contains the data for all seven experiments in our paper, "Perspective Cue Contamination: How Viewing Position in Virtual Reality Distorts Employee Judgment." The paper shows that viewing position changes how people read the same visualized data.
Description
Bars closer to the viewer are judged as larger, and this carries into gambling choices and trend forecasts.

Files

- Study 1A: 24 Amazon Mechanical Turk workers judged bar charts in a non-immersive virtual office on a computer monitor (3,331 observations).

- Study 1B: 47 undergraduate students did the same task in an immersive virtual office using a Meta Quest 2 headset (4,168 observations).

- Study 2A: Prolific participants chose between a risky gamble and a guaranteed $0.25 after seeing the win probability as a bar chart from the left or right.
The file also has their judged probability of winning.

- Study 2B.1: 78 Prolific participants (after exclusions) forecast the next value of a US employment time series viewed from the left or right.

- Study 2B.2: 99 Prolific participants (after exclusions) forecast week 10 of a controlled time series viewed from the left or right.

- Study 3A: 46 Prolific participants who own VR headsets judged charts where values were encoded by color instead of bar height (1,328 observations).

- Study 3B: 33 Prolific participants judged bar charts in a virtual office with added depth cues (957 observations).

Task

In Studies 1A, 1B, 3A, and 3B, two bars were marked on each chart.

Participants judged the smaller marked bar as a percentage of the larger one. Charts were viewed from different positions (left, right, or center).

Variables

Variable names follow the paper.

- Studies 1A, 1B, 3A, 3B: JudgedPercent (participant's estimate), ActualPercent (true ratio of the smaller bar to the larger bar), SmallerCloser (1 if the smaller marked bar was on the side nearer the viewer, 0 otherwise).
In the Study 3B file these columns are named answer, correct_answer, and side_small. That file also has columns for trial number, chart dataset ID, viewing position, and timestamp.

- Study 2A: Gamble (1 if the participant chose the gamble), JudgedSize (judged probability of winning, 0 to 100).

- Studies 2B.1 and 2B.2: Prediction (forecasted value), FromLeft (1 if viewed from the left, -1 if viewed from the right).
