Plurality in transformative change: three co-created pathways toward nature-positive Europe(s) – Replication Data

Listed in IISH Dataverse

Dataset Description This dataset contains materials generated during the second workshop of an iterative co-creation process focused on developing transformative pathways.

Description

The workshop formed part of a structured participatory research design in which stakeholders collaboratively developed, refined, and evaluated pathways for systemic change. The materials archived here represent the digitized and structured outputs of the second workshop.

These outputs were subsequently analysed by the research team and serve as the empirical basis for further pathway development and scholarly analysis.

Background

Europe is experiencing rapid biodiversity loss, requiring transformative change rather than incremental policy adjustments. However, there is no single understanding of what transformative change means or how a nature-positive future should be achieved. This study explores different possible pathways toward a nature-positive Europe.

Purpose To explore different pathways toward a nature-positive Europe and how different understandings of transformative change shape these pathways. Data Collection and Methods ● Data Processing and anonymization milestones All materials have been digitized and, where necessary, anonymized to remove identifiable personal information. The dataset reflects the outputs as generated during the co-creation process, with minimal transformation beyond structuring and formatting for analytical clarity.

The materials archived here represent the digitized and structured outputs of the second workshop. These outputs were subsequently analysed by the research team and serve as the empirical basis for further pathway development and scholarly analysis. Research Limitations The co-creation methodology shaped the pathways that emerged, with participants tending to converge around dominant perspectives within their groups, thereby limiting the diversity of views within each pathway.

The study involved only 23 participants, with follow-up interviews with 9 participants, which limits the range of perspectives represented. Consequently, the findings provide valuable qualitative insights into possible pathways toward a nature-positive Europe but are not intended to be representative of all European stakeholders or predictive of future developments. Data Structure and Relationships Between Files The dataset includes: ● Digitized raw workshop data Transcribed and anonymized outputs produced by participants during Workshop 2 (e.g., flipcharts, templates, written inputs). ● Structured tables of actions and milestones Researcher-organized tables capturing proposed actions, sequencing, milestones, and pathway elements derived from workshop materials. ● Summarized discussion notes Synthesized notes documenting key discussions, reflections, and deliberations during the workshop. ● Synthesis of webinar outcomes A structured summary of insights from a follow-up webinar in which pathway elements were discussed and refined.

Value of the data for potential reuse This dataset supports the findings reported in the associated journal article. It enables transparency regarding the structure of the co-created pathways and the analytical steps undertaken in interpreting workshop outputs. Results Three distinct pathways emerged, each reflecting a different approach to transformative change: Dòigh Nàdair emphasises community-led action and biocultural values; NaturAll focuses on sufficiency, ecological limits, and stronger regulation; and Return to Nature highlights institutional action, expert knowledge, and innovation.

Conclusion There is no single pathway to a nature-positive Europe; different perspectives can lead to diverse but complementary pathways.
