Conserved and lineage-specific mechanisms drive chromatophore differentiation in reptiles

Listed in NCBI GEO

We employed single-cell RNA sequencing using the 10X Genomics platform to study chromatophore development in reptilian embryonic skin.

Description

Pigment cells have been well characterized in fish, but little is known about their development in reptiles. We analyzed dorsal skin from corn snakes and bearded dragons across multiple developmental stages.

Our data reveal distinct chromatophore lineages and species-specific differences in their organization. This study represents the first single-cell characterization of reptilian pigmentation and provides new insights into the evolution of vertebrate skin coloration.
